What is Nipple Hair?
Unwanted hair growth on the breasts or chest, around the nipples, is a very common skin complaint. The skin all over our bodies is naturally covered in many hair follicles. Some hair follicles produce fine transparent hairs that are hardly noticeable, while others harbour coarser hair that can be seen as problematic. Nipple hair is most commonly located on or just outside the areolas, the darker pigmented circles surrounding the nipple.
Generally, breast or nipple hair initially presents as fine, thin hair. However, with hormonal fluctuations during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause, it may grow coarser and thicker, and darker.
Unless accompanied by other symptoms persistent with a hormonal imbalance, nipple hair is generally not a cause for concern. Although its presence is not harmful, it can often lead to feelings of self-consciousness or a negative self-image. Here at Eden Skin Clinic, we offer two highly effective treatments for permanent nipple hair reduction at our Kensington and Wimbledon clinics.
What Treatments are Available for Nipple Hair
At Eden Skin Clinic, we offer two effective treatment options that can be used to reduce nipple hair permanently. These treatments are available at both our Kensington and Wimbledon clinics.
Electrolysis Hair Removal
Electrolysis hair removal is a highly effective hair removal treatment. It works by permanently destroying each hair follicle with a very fine, disposable, and sterile probe combined with a direct current. Once this process has been completed, the hair follicle can no longer reproduce over time.
Multiple sessions will be necessary to completely prevent hair from returning. If a hormonal imbalance causes your hair growth, the process may be slower, but it is still possible.
Safe and reliable, electrolysis hair removal can be used to target hairs on sensitive areas like the nipple. Unlike laser hair removal treatments, electrolysis does not require you to shave down the hair beforehand. This is because the hair must be visible during treatment for our therapists to be able to enter the hair follicle.
IPL Hair Removal
IPL hair removal treatment is also suitable for reducing the growth of nipple hair. This treatment is particularly efficient at treating large areas of unwanted or excessive hair growth on the body. However, it can also be used to target smaller areas of hair growth.
The treatment works by directing controlled pulses of light into the skin, which are absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair shaft. This energy is then converted into heat which destroys the follicle. Because of this, IPL hair removal is not suitable for white, blonde, or red hair and works best on darker hair.
It is a quick process, and whilst it can be uncomfortable, it is not usually considered overly painful. Most people experience a slight stinging and heat sensation, but this is short-lived. Typically, a course of 6-8 sessions at our Wimbledon or Kensington clinic is required to see a permanent reduction in hair growth.
What Causes Nipple Hair?
In most cases, nipple hair is completely normal. The glands located in your areola are there to secrete a sebaceous material that helps keep your skin moisturised. However, these glands can also produce hair. When nipple hair is thicker, coarser, and darker than normal, it can appear more noticeable and be viewed as a nuisance.
For women, nipple hair that occurs from hormonal imbalances is often a direct result of conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). As well as this, pregnancy or menopause may also influence hormone levels resulting in nipple hair and excess hair on other areas of the body.
During pregnancy, there is a surge in estrogen levels. Because of this, the anagen phase of hair growth is prolonged and intensified. Anagen is the most active stage of hair growth. Throughout this stage, the cells in the root of the hair are rapidly dividing in preparation for growth.
