What are Saggy or Drooping Eyelids?
Saggy or drooping eyelids, also known as ptosis, are a common sign of the natural ageing process. The upper eyelids are incredibly delicate, supported by muscle, bone and fat. When the muscles that open your eyelids weaken over time, this can cause them to sag, droop or overhang.
With age, cellular turnover begins to slow. As a result, the body’s natural collagen and elastin production decrease. Collagen and elastin are key components in the skin’s structure, which help keep it plump and supple. Collagen gives your eyelids strength and flexibility, whereas elastin returns its stretched structure to its original shape with every blink.
Though they are not of any immediate medical concern, noticeably heavy or droopy eyelids can appear to age you beyond your years, which may be disheartening. In some severe cases, ptosis can physically limit or obstruct an individual’s vision, in which case it is advisable to seek medical assistance. However, as a purely cosmetic concern, various treatments are available to help reduce and improve the appearance of heavy or droopy eyelids.
What Treatments Are Available For Saggy Or Drooping Eyelids?
Here at Eden Skin Clinic Wimbledon and Kensington, we offer two highly effective treatment options for reducing and improving the appearance of drooping eyelids.
ACCOR Treatment
ACCOR (Aesthetic Cosmetic Corrector), also known as a plasma pen treatment, is a non-surgical alternative to skin tightening surgery. It offers a permanent solution to reducing heavy, drooping, or saggy upper eyelids by leaving them tighter and smoother.
An ACCOR cosmetic corrector treatment works with a plasma pen being directed over the skin, which projects a small electrical arc from its tip onto the surface. The energy created by the plasma pen heats the skin, causing a tightening effect.
After treatment, the plasma skin tightening effect continues to develop for several weeks as new collagen fibres are produced. The small points of contact made during an ACCOR procedure form scabs that drop off after a week to reveal tighter, smoother skin.
The treatment will continue developing for up to three months, but you can expect to see results instantly for heavy and drooping eyelids. Additionally, you may be required to have top-up sessions no sooner than 12 weeks after the initial treatment.
NeoGen SPA Nitrogen Plasma Treatment
The NeoGen SPA Nitrogen Plasma treatment is another potential treatment option for drooping or sagging eyelids, but it is only available at our Kensington branch. This treatment is particularly used in cases where the hood is not yet so pronounced. Additionally, you may find this treatment is more suitable if the downtime of traditional plasma treatments, such as ACCOR, won’t work with your lifestyle.
Nitrogen gas is converted into plasma inside a state-of-the-art handpiece. The thermal energy produced by this process is transferred onto the skin, targeting areas of concern. The tissue treated will immediately visibly contract, giving a tightened, lifted look.
This process triggers the skin’s natural healing process, stimulating the increased production of collagen for results which improve over time. To get the best results, we typically recommend doing at least three sessions spaced roughly one month apart.

What Causes Saggy or Drooping Eyelids?
The skin surrounding our eyes is the thinnest on the body, making it extremely vulnerable to external factors. Poor protection for the eyes against UV rays can impact the development of heavy or droopy eyelids. Daily exposure to UV rays slows down cellular regeneration, resulting in damage and alterations to the skin’s structure.
A further cause for heavy and droopy eyes can be a poor or rough makeup removal routine. Tugging and pulling on eyelids with cotton pads and harsh chemically infused makeup wipes can cause the eyelids to stretch. Once repeatedly stretched, the eyelids cannot naturally return to their original shape.
Additionally, the muscular structures around the eye deteriorate as our body’s collagen and elastin production decline. As the average person blinks approximately 12 times a minute, this, coupled with regularly touching or rubbing the face, can stretch and weaken the upper eyelid.
When you book a consultation at our Wimbledon or Kensington clinic, one of our specialists will advise you on effectively treating drooping eyelids.
