What to expect from a Micro-needling treatment

What to expect from a Micro-needling treatment

Many people will have experienced problem skin at some stage in their life. Though the blemishes may have slowly healed over time, those pesky pimples that once took over your complexion may have left your skin with minor scarring and discolouration.

To help combat these modern day issues, anti-ageing specialist Lorraine Scrivener, founder of London’s Eden Skin Clinics recommends Micro-needling as the solution. Hailed as “the best recent innovation in skin rejuvenation,” Micro-needling is an effective way to reverse skin damage.

What is Micro-needling?

Micro-needling is a motorized surgical instrument with a disposable needle tip cartridge with 12 micro-needles which glides over the skin. It lightly stamps microscopic channels into the skin which stimulate a wound-healing response, resulting in intense renewal, repair and rejuvenation.

Natural growth factors are released to stimulate reformation and deposition of fresh, restricting collagen.

Why choose Micro-needling?

“It is safer and more effective in piercing the skin than traditional skin needling rollers as there is less risk of tearing the skin,” explains Lorraine.

Micro-needling oscillates vertically into the skin and has adjustable speed and depth control allowing us:

  • to tailor the treatment to each individual client and
  • effectively treat hard-to-reach places.

What results will I see from Micro-needling?

The benefits of having the treatment are significant, including:

  • Reduced wrinkles and fine lines on the face, neck, hands and body
  • Improvement in overall skin tone and texture
  • Skin tightening
  • Reduced pore size
  • Calms Rosacea
  • Scar and wound healing
  • Treats sun damage
  • Reduces appearance of stretch marks
  • Minimised pores

Is Micro-needling painful?

“The great thing about Micro-needling is no anaesthetic is needed” explains Lorraine.

“I personally have tried and tested the treatment and it feels more like vibration on the skin. This is dependent on the needle depth chosen and you may experience a slight discomfort in certain areas, but again not enough for anaesthetic to be applied to the skin.”

Are there any side-effects to Micro-needling?

“A thorough consultation is given to ensure clients do not have any contraindications to treatments, such as certain medications, diseases or disorders” explains Lorraine.

“Side effects are minimal but can include mild shedding, looking slightly sunburned and in some very rare cases light bruising, but these usually fade within 24-48 hours, if not a few hours.

She stresses, “the area should not be exposed to the sun, tanning bed, heat, hot water or sauna for 5-7 days. It is extremely important to protect your skin with at least SPF 30 at all times. Mineral make-up can be worn to hide any redness.”

How long does Micro-needling take to work?

Usually with a thorough consultation, treatment and aftercare given, the total treatment time takes about 45 minutes for the face and neck, but depending on other areas of the body treatment time may vary.

With minimal downtime, Micro-needling can be fitted in around your normal daily routine.

How often is maintenance required for Micro-needling?

Lorraine recommends a course of 3 or 6 every 4 to 6 weeks apart, however, this depends on what the treatment is intended for.

What other non-invasive treatments does Micro-needling complement?

Mirco-Needling can be used alongside our other treatments, including Venus Freeze, microdermabrasion, skin peels, and IPL skin rejuvenation – some even on the same day for ultimate results.

How does Micro-needling compare with Laser Rejuvenation?

Micro-needling stimulates the collagen and elastins as does laser resurfacing, but without the risk of injury or damage to the epidermis. It is also much more economical and long lasting.
